How Australian income tax is calculated

  1. Work out taxable income. Salary, bonuses and other income, minus salary sacrifice and deductions.
  2. Apply the tax brackets. Each slice of income is taxed at its own rate. A higher rate only applies to the part of your income inside that bracket.
  3. Subtract offsets. The low income tax offset (up to $700) reduces tax for incomes under $66,667.
  4. Add the Medicare levy. 2% of taxable income, reduced for low incomes. Add the surcharge if you have no private hospital cover and earn over the threshold.
  5. Add HELP repayments if you have a student debt and earn over $69,528.

Worked example: $85,000

15% × ($45,000 − $18,200) + 30% × ($85,000 − $45,000) = $4,020 + $12,000 = $16,020

Add the Medicare levy of $1,700 and you pay $17,720 in total, taking home $67,280 a year ($2,588 a fortnight). With a HECS debt, a further $2,321 is withheld.

Frequently asked questions

How much tax will I pay in Australia in 2026-27?

It depends on your taxable income. A resident earning $80,000 pays $14,520 income tax plus $1,600 Medicare levy, leaving $63,880. Enter your own income above for an exact figure.

What are the tax rates for 2026-27?

For residents: 0% up to $18,200, 15% from $18,201 to $45,000, 30% to $135,000, 37% to $190,000 and 45% above $190,000. The Medicare levy of 2% is added on top.

How much is the tax cut from 1 July 2026?

The rate on income between $18,201 and $45,000 fell from 16% to 15%. Anyone earning over $45,000 saves $268 a year; people earning less save 1% of their income above $18,200.

Does the calculator include the low income tax offset?

Yes. The LITO of up to $700 is applied automatically for residents earning under $66,667.

Is super included in my take-home pay?

No. Super is paid by your employer into your super fund. Tick "includes super" if your salary is quoted as a total package, and we'll split out the 12% super first.

What is the Medicare levy surcharge?

An extra 1% to 1.5% charged if you earn over $105,000 (single, 2026-27) and don't have private hospital cover. Open "More options" to include it.

Can I calculate tax for a working holiday visa?

Yes. Choose "Working holiday" under residency. Working holiday makers pay 15% on the first $45,000 and don't pay the Medicare levy.
